The Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday) is by far the most holiest and sacred times of the year. It offers us a time to experience the greatest sorrows and the greatest joys the world has ever seen.
The liturgy helps us to enter into these three sacred days and one of the most powerful readings the Church gives us is on Holy Saturday in the Office of Readings. The second reading for Holy Saturday is “From an ancient homily on Holy Saturday” and narrates the “harrowing of Hell,” when Jesus “descended into Hell” and rescued Adam, Eve and all the righteous who were waiting for the Messiah.
In the homily we see Christ speaking words to Adam and while they are primarily directed at him, they are also directed to us.
Jesus says to us through the ancient homily, “Awake, O sleeper…I order you…to awake.” Let us allow Jesus to take our hand and raise us from the sin that has killed the divine life within us. Jesus suffered so much for our sake and has prepared a banquet in our honor. Let us “leave this place” of sin in our lives and allow God to raise us from the dead and be born to Eternal Life.
