The Importance of Giving Thanks

In the United States we celebrate each year "Thanksgiving," a national holiday when families across the country gather together to eat, laugh and enjoy each other's company. It is a special time in the hearts of many and allows a family to reconnect and grow in love.

Last year Pope Francis gave some great advice to families that is perfect for the Thanksgiving holiday as well as every day of the year. He said, "How many times do we say, 'Thank you' in our family, our community, and in the Church? How many times do we say, 'Thank you' to those who help us, to those close to us, to those who accompany us through life? Often we take everything for granted! This also happens with God. It is easy to approach the Lord to ask for something, but to return and give thanks … That is why Jesus so emphasizes the failure of the nine ungrateful lepers: 'Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?' (Lk 17:17-18)."

As members of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, it is important to always return to God to give thanks for the many blessings he has given us and for answering our prayers. By doing so we realize that everything is a gift; all that we see around us has been given to us by God.

In thanksgiving to God, let us offer our very lives back to him in our Daily Offering, praising him for the many blessings he has given us.
